Online communities to connect with experienced Software Engineers for career advice

0

Background

I am a student at Penn State pursuing an online Masters in Software Engineering. My undergrad was a BS is Civil Engineering and I just finished six years of US Army service as an Engineer officer. Currently I am a full time stay at home dad and student in South Korea while my wife finishes her military career. There are no jobs available to me here in Korea that would advance my career. Also, childcare has a one year wait list. I am struggling to figure out what the best use of my limited time is to build experience to start a career in Software Engineering when I return to the United States in two years. Options I have considered are open source contribution, learning a new language/technology, completing a personal project for my portfolio, or doing contract work on Upwork/Freelancer.

Question

I do not know anyone who is in the industry and do not know where else to turn to for advice to start networking. I understand StackExchange is not the place to ask for career advice according to the rules so where is a good place?
