How to connect with experienced Software Engineers for career advice online

0

Background

I am a student at Penn State pursuing an online Masters in Software Engineering. My undergrad was a BS is Civil Engineering and I just finished six years of US Army service as an Engineer officer. Currently I am a full time stay at home dad and student in South Korea while my wife finishes her military career. Childcare here has a one year wait list so I am stuck jobless. I am struggling to figure out what the best use of my limited time is to build experience to start a career in Software Engineering when I return to the United States in two years. Options I have considered are open source contribution, learning a new language/technology, completing a personal project for my portfolio, or doing contract work on Upwork/Freelancer.

Question

I do not know anyone who is in the industry and do not know where else to turn to for advice to start networking. Where are some online communities where I can start networking with experienced software engineers for career advice?
