Employer announces meetings soley via facebook, ditto some current practices and updates

0

Short version of questions: -->Is it unprofessional or ...rude... if an employer/supervisor group posts information like staff meetings (not mandatory but paid) to the staff only facebook group (which I'm a member of) knowing that I'm never on Facebook?

(I've missed 1 meeting because of this, and only made 2 others because I heard people at work talking about it in a conversation once, and actually went on facebook to see what the chaos was when I got back from being gone for a week).

--->Secondly and similarly, I work for an animal shelter, and when new animals with specific needs or ways of being handled come in, or when there are new training updates or similar are decided or noticed, they're then posted on the group facebook page... which I'm never on. They're hardly ever posted physically at the workplace--so to learn about them I literally have to be on facebook. Not often, but sometimes, that information can be crucial (such as if a dog is super car reactive and will try to bite the leash or your arm, etc when walking on the road, and as busy as we are in the morning for first walks, I don't want to have to pester a coworker to see if this dog has any peculiarities. Also, sometimes a potential adopter will want certain information that's not in the paper file but is something we've noticed and was put on facebook.... I don't want to have to say "hang on let me check facebook" so I can get the work-pertinant information when I'm on the clock. Also, at work, we don't have wifi, public or private, and my phone doesn't get good enough reception to go on the internet very well at their location... on top of that, it's MY PERSONAL PHONE and I pay the phone bill, and it's a Straight Talk phone, and while I usually don't run out of data, I still am paying for that bill--so I can't really go on facebook on the clock to get the information...and if they expect me to look at this info when I'm at home or wherever, that's expecting me to work off the clock, during time for me to do things that aren't working like taking care of my pets, myself, my husband recently diagnosed with Parkinsons (not fishing for sympathy, just saying I'm not being lazy!)...).
I've mentioned that I don't go on facebook a few times to some of the supervisors and coworkers but just missed a staff meeting yesterday because I didn't know about it. I've also had a co-worker say things like "well you should look on facebook because I posted about blah" and I say, I'm never on facebook ... They have a 'pager' the supervisors pass around to be on call overnight, which is actually a smart phone, possibly a tracfone or similar. Also, we do have a phone at work for calling people and taking phone calls. They can totally leave me a phone message or text message, via normal communication channels. I'd also like to see some form of posting the information about behavior issues, health issues, etc. in a physical form easily accessible in the shelter so I don't have to try to work off the clock and memorize information at the home, but that might be asking for too much...sigh.

The longer story of why I don't want to make waves ... I worked for the animal shelter before I moved from the area, and (insert complicated long back story I'm skipping) my husband and I rather unexpectedly moved back to the area after 5 years being away. One of my previous co-workers/supervisors who still worked there suggested I put in my resume, and since they were shifting staff around, I was hired back to my position. I mention this because I've been there 4 months now, and the first 2 months I was staying with the friend because she said "stay with me if your housing takes longer" and it did, so I started working before we actually closed on the house and moved the rest of the family back up. I don't want to make too many waves, but I feel really excluded and like this is an unprofessional, inefficient, assumptive (making assumptions), and potentially 'illegal' way to transmit information (requiring employees to work off the clock is illegal as far as I know).

Am being I a sensitive baby about being expected to spend my off-the-clock time scouring facebook (which I literally log onto about once every 2-3 months, usually for a specific intention like posting pictures from a trip for other relatives to see or getting a mailing address for a family member for a greeting card)...facebook is a SOCIAL network, and I don't want to have to load an extra app for messages on my phone which you can never log out of (tried it, deleted it 'cause you can't), it's my personal phone, and facebook has so much extraneous information with social and entertainment purposes, I don't want to have to sort through all that crap to find one or two bits of information which might be there (even within the closed group for our workplace, it's not always super essential info on there). Thanks for reading this far, I'm hoping to condense this comment into something more concise and more ...p.c. to send as a comment/request to the manager so I can maybe get the ball rolling on fixing it without offending anyone... but I'd like to make sure others think I'm being hypersensitive.

As a p.s. I would have used "unpaid" "off-clock" or "off-the-clock" "announcements" as keywords but they don't exist yet, and "discrimination" isn't exactly a great fit but I'm being discriminated against because I'm not glued to Facebook like it's a biological implant.
